Maya Angelou wrote, “There is nothing so pitiful as a young cynic because he has gone from knowing nothing to believing nothing.”
A cynic will rarely let you down in terms of predictability. They will remember everything that has gone wrong and apply that attitude to the future. They picture the outcome of situations in the worse way possible–before they even happen.
Negativity in one person can drain the energy of an entire group. A cynic can stop the momentum of an otherwise motivated team.
It’s really important to be aware of our own cynicism that rears its ugly head from time to time. After being burned, fight the “I’ll never trust” mindset that creeps up. Battle the “been there, done that” bias when facing something new. And work tirelessly at staying hopeful, even though mistakes will be made and sometimes we will fail.
