Things don’t always go as planned. That’s no big life secret and most of us have experienced that repeatedly. The problem is, no matter how much we tell ourselves to prepare as best we can and go with the flow, it’s still hard to remain positive when things don’t go the way we had expected. It’s easy to get caught in the moment with worry and even anger about why things played out the way they did. The key is reflection–constant reflection. Ask yourself, “how can I move forward and regain positive momentum?”

It’s never easy to deal with things that don’t go our way, but having the steps in place to deal with it will help you handle the detours that are inevitable in life.

  1. Face the fact that things are not going as planned.
  2. Remember that you’re not the first person to experience this.
  3. Speak to yourself with positivity. It starts within.
  4. Consider your own actions. Don’t immediately put the blame on others. Self-reflect, find the lesson and move on.
  5. Once you’ve taken a step back and looked at the situation and learned from it, set new goals.
  6. Ask for support. Everyone needs a support system when things get tough. Don’t do it alone.
  7. Let it go. Move forward.
