How do you stay motivated to do something that you really want but just can’t seem to accomplish?

1. Figure Out What is Really Holding You Back

Likely, you have some searching to do before you get to the real issue. Sift through the excuses to understand what is really stopping you.

Some excuses:

  • Time, Money, Permission

Write it all down. Likely, once it’s written, you’ll discover that those are just surface excuses.

What’s really holding you back:

  • Fear of Rejection, Failure, and of No Predictable Outcome

What would happen, really, if you don’t please everyone, if you don’t succeed, if you don’t know what will happen if you try? Fear you can overcome.

2. Just Get Started

Don’t look at the entire process and get discouraged. Start with writing down a list of the steps to take to get to the goal. Make sure you leave some room for flexibility…things happen and you don’t want that to throw you completely! Writing down the steps will also assure you that the goal you’re reaching for is reasonable.

And then just start! When you were younger, you didn’t learn to speak overnight (well, most people). Instead, word by word, you got better and because you didn’t know, you didn’t let the big task in front of you of learning to speak get to you.

3. Let Your Passion Take Over

Long Term Goals are called Long Term Goals for a reason. Passion is a strong emotion, especially when you first set your sights on a goal. Then the rational side takes over when the real starts. It’s easy to get frustrated with the steps and forget why you started in the first place.

Stay passionate. If it were easy, you would have done it already…as would everyone else. Beat the naysayer inside your head. Give yourself some flexibility. You will not be successful 100% of the way, but as long as the end result is still possible, who cares?

“The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it.”
― Jordan Belfort

Motivation and change are challenging. They require some discomfort and a ton of passion but if you’re doing it for the right reasons–nothing can stop you.
