On a Monday morning, as we wrap our minds around the things we need to accomplish during the work week, the reminder to “seek first to understand, then to be understood,” is especially powerful. How much easier could communication be if we put our own agendas aside and really listen to what other’s are saying to us?
Listen first. This is the principal of the fifth habit in Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Successful People. Covey teaches that the majority of people listen with the intent to reply instead of actively listening to what the other person is saying.
We often make determinations before we look at all sides when communicating. Today, take the time to deeply understand the problems presented. Think in the moment versus one step ahead. It will change everything.
